Using a Website Builder or Hiring a Web Designer: Pros and Cons

There are several different ways that you can build a website, two of the most common options are to use a website builder or to hire a web designer. Both offer advantages and disadvantages so you will need to consider these in order to decide which is best for your site. In large part this will depend on the type of site that you are building and your own skills as a designer.

swatch The main advantage that you get from using a website builder to create your site is that it is by far the cheapest option. There are free ones available but you will get better results if you choose one of the paid ones. Even a paid website builder will cost a fraction of what it would cost you to hire a web designer. The other big advantage that a website builder offers is that it requires virtually no technical skills. There are lots of templates that you can use so there is really nothing more to building your site than adding the content.

While a website builder can be a great option in a lot of cases there are a couple of disadvantages that may not make it the best choice. The biggest disadvantage is that you will be limited in what you can do with your site. Since you can only use the templates that they supply you will not be able to customize your site. This is generally not a problem for most smaller sites but if you are building a large site you will probably find your design options to be limiting. The other big disadvantage is that it can take a long time to get your site built this way.

The other option that you have for building your website is a web designer. The advantage here is that you will have a professional designing your site. That means that you can get any custom features that you want. In addition a good web designer will know what goes into a good website so will be able to offer advice on how to make your site better. In addition since the web designer does all the work you won't have to do any of it yourself which will save you a lot of time.

The big disadvantage of a web designer is cost. Prices can vary pretty dramatically but the better designers are pretty expensive especially when they design for CMS'es like WordPress or Drupal and you do tend to get what you pay for. The other big disadvantage to using a web designer is that you will probably not be able to maintain your own site which means that you will need to call them every time that you need to update it. This can really add to the cost.
